LOL tam biet is actually Bye too Not take care Doanh but ppl use it many way LOL Yea is all start when the Vietnam Empire (AnNam) Conqueor the Chem Tan Empire Lol i guess after that we they start to use it the wrong way and the ppl use it the wrong way, Now everybody use it different way so that's y you guy and girl see so many different way to say Bye and Hi and Other word . i'm confuse myself sometime....

Yeah i agree with you, there are so many different words hte viet uses to say one word in english, it's a bit baffling sometimes, also what doesn't help is that some of the north terms are different to south terms, let alone the pronounciation, lol.
Like watch, i think the north term is xem, the south term is er i cant spell it.
It's a tad too confusing, lol.
Yeah but don't you say take care when you're saying bye, i don't say goodbye. or bye, i just say take care in english or in viet, lol.
I hardly say goodbye, only when i'm online.

yeah actually there are 5 type of vietnamese North Viet , South Viet , Central Viet, Chem Tan(Between South and Central viet), and Native viet. Yes but the most comment one that we are using are South viet and the north viet . central viet and native viet still use in vietnam but not outside of the country. Chem Tan is no long in use but i believe There's still ppl using it in a small part of vietnam... :?

yea i was in first grade in viet skool i learn the basic but i haven't used it for a while so i forgot how to write it... lol but yea i remember the accent cause everybody around me speak different part of viet LOl. my Dentist is speaking Hue My Family speak South , My Aunt Husband speak North LOl so i understand alot... :D

oh yeah, ill just post the rest of the colors:

mau do: red
mau sanh duong: blue
mau sanh lá: green (kinda obvious because "lá" means leaf)

I say it a bit differently,
i say mau sanh (sea/water) for blue
and mau sanh la (stick i think) for green, lol.Similar but not the same.

**did you know that every sentence in english is switch around if you wanna say it in viet????**

Example:
Ban = my Friend a person about ur age
tien = name
la = is
vy = what

In English you would say

What is your name my Friend? = correct English grammar
Vy La tien ban = incorrect viet grammar

In Viet without Your* in it and switch it around .

Ban tien la vy? = correct viet grammar
MyFriend name is what? = also correct but different meaning , In another word rarely use this kinda sentence...

GET? LOL it Switch around when u translate something in english to viet or viet to english try some sentence and see it for urself , but there might be some exception....... tell me if you found an exception sentence that doesn't need to be switch around . Thank For You Time may ban and Anh chi , em. :D

Vietnamese is similiar to French in the sense of like blue jumper, in english we say blue jumper, in french we say jumper blue (un sweatshirt bleu) same in viet, we say jumper blue, noun first, then adjective. :wink:

During the Nguyen Dynasty the French conquerors vietnam , laos, and cambodia and name All three INDOCHINE. They rule us for so lone that's why when they brought in all the mordern product , we don't know what it actually call cause we never seen them before, so we call them the way the French called them like Coffee (English) . The French call them Cafe so we call them Cafe also cause we never seen cafe before. Plus before the French conquerors us we write in chinese style , we just speak different but we write the same way the chinese does. So There's this French Priest decided that if we speak different then we should right different from the Chinese Empire . He later invented the Vietname ABC is like French we use French style too but some style of the French make it different from Vietnamese.

Just correcting...It helps to have someone correct you so you know better...

Thua = It's a respective way of saying hello / goodbye to an elder (mums,dads,uncles,etc)
Ba = Dad
Mẹ = Mum
Chú = Uncle (on the fathers' side...referred to an actual uncle on the fathers' side or a man-friend on the father's side)
Cô = Aunty (on the fathers' side...referred to an actual aunty on the fathers' side or a female-friend on the father's side)
Cạu = Uncle (on the mothers' side...referreed to an actual uncle on the mothers' side or a male-friend of the mothers')
Dì = Aunty (on the mothers' side...referred to an actual aunty on the mothers' side or a female-friend of the mothers')
Ong nọi / Bà nọi = Grandfather / Grandmother on the fathers' side
Ong ngoại / Bà ngoại = Grandfather / Grandmother on the mothers' side

Chào = Hello / bye (to friends)
Chị = a respective term for a girl who is older than you (almost like a sister...used in family as "older sister")
Anh = as above but for guys...
Em = Is for the younger ones (unisex)
Tôi tên là = My name is...
Tôi đi chợ - I'm going to the shops
Anh/Chi/Em khỏe khong = How are you?

So yeah...now that's basic!

bà xã is a nickname you refer to you wife...it's another term for wife in viet but more of slang you know what I mean? "vợ" is wife in vietnamese

i dont know if they are a girl/guy or if they are older, it's not rude, it's just impolite, plus im not teaching them english :wink:

My vietnamese isnt that "great" so reading writing is bad... Later on i think ill take up a course at the SOAS (rank 4 on UK unis) to improve my Vietnamese i wanna be like my family.

Eh... How about half-asians ;)? I've actually used some phrases I learnt here when talking with some of my Vietnamese friends and none of the phrases or words were rude in nature...

The funniest thing i know of rude words is that if you call a someone a horse its blatently rude lol
Same goes with Con Heo (A Pig) which refers to slut.

wahhh? my uni is ranked 12th in the UK woooooo i thought it was going down, last i heard it was just outside the top 50, although it used to be consistently in the top 25 ^_^.
My big bro's uni is ranked 6th -_-

SOAS does viet? cool, you never know bro, we might be in the same class :wink:

Enquired about the course for the next term which starts in October. The cost is going to be £705 for 30 weeks. I could get some money from my employer, but the problem is that I can't get to London in time for the start of the lessons. Even harder next year as I can only attend 50% of the time.

This year they offer Saturdays classes, next year it is Tuesdays for beginners and Thursdays for immediates. There again, Saturdays are the day I will be watch the likes of Man utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea liverpool etc...

Shame as I would have loved to brush up my Vietnamese and get taught properly not parrot fashion. I suppose I should get a Vietnamese girlfriend then to help. Don't worry all you women on this forum, I'll get an catalogue and pick one from the list.
